That single difference explains everything else about them. TripIt takes what you have already booked and lays it out in order. Plotline takes what you want to do and works out which of it fits in a day. Both jobs need doing on any trip, and almost nobody does both in one app.

So this is a thinner contest than most comparisons. If you searched for a TripIt alternative, the useful question is which half you are missing.

What TripIt does

You forward a confirmation email to TripIt, or connect your inbox, and it reads the booking. Flights, hotels, car rentals and restaurant reservations get parsed into one chronological itinerary carrying dates, times and confirmation numbers. It works offline, syncs to your calendar, and you can share the itinerary with whoever you are travelling with. The free tier does all of that, with document uploads capped at three per trip.

TripIt Pro is $49 a year and built for people who fly a lot. Real-time alerts for delays, gate changes and cancellations. Fare monitoring on flights you have already booked, so you can claim the difference when the price drops. A seat tracker that watches for a better one, alternate flight search when yours is cancelled, interactive airport maps, reward-program tracking, and the document limit lifts to 25.

For a frequent flyer that is a strong product, and it has been for well over a decade. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web.

Where TripIt stops

TripIt has no opinion about what you do when you land.

It will not find places. It does not read TikTok, Instagram or YouTube, so the forty spots you saved before the trip are still sitting in the app you saved them in. It does not build a sightseeing day. It does not route anything: a dinner reservation appears at 8pm on Thursday because you booked it for 8pm on Thursday, not because that made sense next to where you already were that afternoon.

None of this is a flaw. It is the product working as designed. TripIt is the reservations layer, and the reservations layer is genuinely useful. The reservations are just usually the smallest part of a trip.

What Plotline does

Plotline starts one layer up, at the thing that made you want to go.

You share a TikTok, an Instagram Reel, a YouTube video, a Google Maps list or any link from the share sheet. Plotline reads the content, pulls out every place mentioned, and pins each one to your map with the creator's tip attached, so six months later the pin still says why it is there. Places sort into nine travel categories, and you can filter a city by them.

Then it builds the days. Give it a destination, dates and a pace, and it routes your saved places into a day-by-day plan, grouping what sits near each other and anchoring days around where you are staying. Friends can co-edit the trip live.

What it will not touch is your bookings. Plotline does not parse confirmation emails, watch your flight or split expenses. Your hotel goes in as a place you pin, and the plan builds outward from it.

Where TripIt is the better answer

**You fly constantly.** Fare monitoring, seat tracking and cancellation rerouting pay for themselves quickly at that volume. Nothing in Plotline touches any of it, and nothing in Plotline is trying to.

**Your trip is mostly reservations.** A conference, a wedding, a work trip with three flights and a hotel. When the bookings are the plan, TripIt is the whole answer and you do not need a second app.

**You are on Android, or you need it offline.** TripIt runs everywhere and its itineraries work with no signal. Plotline is iPhone only right now, with an Android waitlist, and it needs a connection. That is a straightforward gap on our side.

Where Plotline is the better answer

**Your saved places are the trip.** If you have spent two months collecting places from creators you trust, the hard part is not the flight. It is turning thirty scattered pins into five days that make sense on a map.

**You want the reason, not just the pin.** Six months after you save a bakery in Lisbon, the useful part is the line about the custard tarts coming out at ten. Plotline keeps that attached to the place.

**You are going with other people.** Co-editing a trip live, with editor and viewer roles, is free in Plotline.

One trip, both apps

Four days in Lisbon. You booked the flights in March and the hotel in April, and you have been saving places off TikTok since January.

TripIt has the flights, the hotel and the airport transfer, in order, with confirmation numbers, working offline in a terminal with no wifi. If the outbound gets moved to a different gate, Pro tells you before the board does.

Plotline has the nineteen places. The pastéis place in Belém, the viewpoint someone filmed at sunset, the seafood place a creator said to book two weeks ahead. It knows which three sit close enough to do in one afternoon, and it builds the four days around your hotel in Príncipe Real.

Neither app is doing the other's job badly. They are doing different jobs.

What "TripIt alternative" usually means

Two different searches share that phrase.

Some people want TripIt's job done differently: booking import without the Pro subscription, or expense splitting alongside it. That is Wanderlog, honestly, not us.
